We Used to Be McGregors

One of our relatives named Dick McFarlane recently told me that we used to be McGregors. Dick is also a direct descendant of Peter and Mary McFarlane. He told me that they are doing a McFarlane DNA project and that he had his DNA tested. They discovered that we are actually descendants of the McGregor clan. Because of an incident that happened over three hundred years ago, our ancestors were forced to change their last name. They chose to change it to McFarlane.
Dick wrote, "The historic territory occupied by the MacGregors was Perthshire, while the MacFarlanes occupied Dumbartonshire.... Having said that, the two clans mingled freely.... There were no fences erected to keep the clans from mingling." The McFarlanes' territory was on the west side of Loch Lomond, while the McGregors' territory was on the east side.
